The Two Marathons
On the 21st of January, the ARC Team joined forces with Adventures Beyond Barriers Foundation (ABBF), an organisation dedicated to promoting Disability Inclusion through adventure and sports activities.
The volunteering group consisting of individuals from the ARC Team played a crucial role in supporting PwDs (Persons with Disability) to ensure a seamless experience at the TATA Mumbai Marathon. This was the first time where we came together without a specific work agenda.
Though the main marathon event took place on Sunday morning, preparations kicked off a day earlier, on Saturday.
On Saturday, a dedicated group of volunteers worked tirelessly, sticking to tight schedules. From ensuring the comfort of the participants in their dorms to serving meals and coordinating the logistics of the race, the tasks seemed never-ending.
The preparations for the marathon felt like a marathon in itself!
At the end of the day, after a shared dinner, one of us overheard a PwD talking to their loved one on the phone. They expressed having a fulfilling meal and their anticipation for the marathon the next day. This filled our hearts with happiness.
We realised that it was a massive day for them and we had to give it our all.
The following day, despite functioning on minimal sleep, the volunteers were fuelled by the energies and enthusiasm of the PwD runners. Their excitement was contagious, and we found strength in each other’s spirits as we navigated the behind-the-scenes marathon.
The main marathon commenced at Azad Maidan, where PwDs ran alongside their allies. Upon crossing the finish line, they returned to the tent. As everyone poured into the tent, pure joy and elation filled the air. It felt as if the behind-the-scenes volunteers ran with them in spirit!
Reflecting on the 'two marathons' the physical race and the intensive preparation, we realised the parallel journey of challenges and victories. Both marathons required endurance, dedication, and a collective spirit.
The experience taught us that there is always more than what meets the eye.
Whether it's the effort behind organising a marathon or looking beyond a person’s disability into their untapped potential.
In the end, it wasn't just about crossing a finish line, it was about breaking barriers and fostering inclusion.
