The Art and Science of Coaching

In our Leadership Coaching Journeys, there are largely two points of focus- external and internal.

An external focus is more on the visible, tangible, and measurable aspects such as assessments, frameworks and techniques. These are easier to teach and fall within the ‘Science of Coaching’.

On the other hand, an internal focus addresses more abstract things such as thoughts, feelings, attitudes and emotions, the different facets of coaching that are neither visible nor directly measurable, thus falling in the ‘Art of Coaching’.

Both these areas are indispensable in top leadership positions, yet there is a tendency among coaches to lean solely on the external focus. Coaches may amass all the knowledge about different models and techniques.

However, it's equally crucial to ground oneself in the here and now, gauging the mentee's current state of mind. A coach must be attuned to the moment, understanding the mentee's emotions and receptiveness to absorb those coaching insights.

The sweet spot lies in striking a balance between these two foci.

And that’s the difference in the Leadership Coaching Journies at ARC…
