Modern World Superstitions

The first thought that comes to my mind when I hear the word ‘superstition’ is how as children we were told that a black cat crossing us, was considered bad luck.

Superstitions are often associated with a silly belief of the primitive and uneducated.

But as pointed rightly in Marshal Goldsmith’s book- ‘What Got You Here Won’t Get You There’, to a degree we are all superstitious.

The higher we climb the organisational ladder, the more prone we are to “modern superstitions” in the workplace.

Most of us scorn superstition as the silly belief of the primitive and uneducated. To a degree we are all superstitious.

In many cases, the higher we climb the organisational totem pole, the more superstitious we become.

These superstitions stem from a simple mistake: believing that the behaviours which led to past success will ensure future success.

Imagine a leader who attributes their rise to always being “on” or handling every detail.

While this approach worked in the past, at higher levels, effectiveness often means letting go and seeing things in perspective.

This Diwali break, let’s take some time out to reflect on behaviours that are outdated.
